Surfacing Episode 7
Saturday, November 22, 2008, 11:19 PM GMT [General]
August 14th 1988. Sunday. I offered Adam a sweet today, but he wouldn't touch it because I had bought it in the Arab market. Oh, Adam is a stupid boy in some ways. We were sitting on tractor-powered wagon this morning on the way to work. There were ten or twelve of us, mostly volunteers, still dopey with sleep. Adam had tried to open a conversation with a young Israeli girl. She looked just sixteen or so, very beautiful with her long hair and striking green eyes. She didn't respond to Adam's comment about the weather, just nodded as though she didn't fully understand. So he, assuming that she couldn't speak English, and maybe feeling peeved because she had shown no interest in attempting to communicate with him, started wittering on about this girl's spots, which she had tried to cover up with foundation. Well, she had caked the make-up on somewhat, and the new morning light showed it up, but he was unspeakably rude, kept going on about how crusty the spots were, and how he was itching to just clip them off with his pruning shears. I was embarrassed, and didn't encourage him at all, but I also assumed that the girl didn't understand English, because she sat there gazing into space as the tractor bumped along, impervious to his talk. Nobody else spoke either, but I suppose Adam thought they all found him funny, because he kept on interminably, sometimes making clipping motions with his shears to underline his point. Then just as we stopped at the Matar - the orchard - the girl leaned towards me and said loudly and clearly, and cool as a cucumber 'Are you aware that almost all Israelis speak fluent English?' 'I wasn't, no' I fumbled in surprise. And you should have seen the look on Adam's face. I talked to the girl a fair bit after that, as we worked. She is very sweet. Her name is Hagit. I did try to explain to her that Adam does not usually behave so badly, and she seemed quite unconcerned about the incident. Maybe kibbutzniks are used to newly arrived volunteers assuming that they don't know English, and play up to it a bit. I like working outside. Jules works in the kitchen, and gives me daily reports on the mechanics of mass cooking and the difficulties of working with a bunch of women who gossip all day in Hebrew, which is of course completely incomprehensible to her. According to Jules, Georges, who works in the kitchen too, pounds the huge vat of potatoes into mash so energetically each day that he sweats buckets of extra fluid into them. So potatoes are now off the menu for me. Despite having to get up so early in the morning there are definite advantages to being in the Matar. There is an intense pleasure to working in the open air, especially when the weather is so perfect. We have to wear something warm at the beginning of the day - the desert is surprisingly cold at night - but by seven or eight o'clock the sun is doing its job. I feel like a pioneer at times, climbing to pluck the fruit from the trees, muscles and sinews at full tilt, mind numbed by the physicality of the work. Once I was allowed to drive a tractor and how I wished my friends from home could see me then, in my navy work shirt, charging a path through the orchards in my John Deere. We go back to the dining room for breakfast anytime before nine, then return soon after for our second shift. We pick pears or peaches mostly, although there are some other fruit crops. The kibbutz is beginning to branch out into olive production - another example of moving with the times. When our work is finished - not long after midday, by which time the heat is too unbearable to work safely or productively - we go back to the dining room for lunch. After that we are free. I have adopted the kibbutz practice of an afternoon nap, then at about three o'clock get up and go off to laze by the pool with the other volunteers. The pool is lovely - large, clean and above all, cool. There was quite a commotion poolside one afternoon last week - one of the young Israeli girls dove into the pool in her skimpy bikini, and the bottom part of the thing just came off. It was one of those triangular shaped ones that tied with string at the sides, and I don't know if the string had come loose or the dive itself loosened the whole thing, but there was her pink bikini floating on the surface of the pool for all to see. Everyone did see, because Vic pointed it out to all and sundry. The girl, to her credit, just swam up, grabbed the thing and put it on while treading water, so she was covered in seconds. She didn't seem particularly bothered by the incident - gave no indication that she was, anyway. It did make me ponder the ramifications of growing up on kibbutz, though. Everybody knows everything about you from the moment you are born, and any awkward moments (of which there are so many in adolescence, and so acutely felt) are open to public appraisal. I can understand why so many young people move away when they grow up, to find a partner from outside the community and live a life that is less public, less suffocating.
How long does marijuana stay in your system?
Saturday, November 22, 2008, 11:17 PM GMT [Health]
Please Note: The times below are intended to give a rough idea only, everyones body is different. Also note that different types of drug tests will reveal the remains of drug toxins longer than others. The times below are intented to be used for urine testing. Some tests, such as hair tests, show a much longer history. ———————————————————————————–
Are you a user of marijuana, related drugs or any other drug for that matter? If the answer is ‘yes’, then be on your guard! Do you know how long the signs of this weed will remain in your system? Read on; there is some news for you! When you use marijuana in the form of smoke or swallow, it the body breaks it down and metabolizes. The harmful chemical tetrahydrocannabinol or THC is separated. This THC is passed into the blood stream and stored in the fat of the body. It does not go away immediately. It slowly goes out of the body along with urine, sweet and saliva. THC is not soluble in water. So it does not go out of the body with these excretions very fast. THC is fat soluble. So fat in the body holds it for a long period. If you smoke marijuana or use any other related drug once, it will take three to four days for your body to throw the weed out of your system, provided of course, you do not smoke a second time during the interim period. If you decide to have another go at the drug a second time within two days of the first, the body will take about a week to discard effects from it after the last use. Every subsequent use within the stipulated period will double the time required to wash the weed off your body. For a frequent user it will take up to forty five days. Since the THC is fat soluble a fat body can store more of the chemical than a lean body. So a fatty addict may take up to sixty days to discard the weed in it. If you want to cheat at a drug test you will not find any success, if the time mentioned above has not expired. Some users are of the belief that in a blood test the traces of the weed will disappear with their urine if they drink plenty of water. That does not happen because THC is not water-soluble. Any quantity of water will not help. Water cannot wash it off. Only time can help you in a blood test. For a casual user a blood test will show ‘positive’ if the test is taken within four days of use. For a regular user the time required is about seven weeks. In the case of a urine test a casual user can be detected within seven days of the use. But for a regular user the weed can be detected up to thirty days. The blood test gives a more accurate test than the urine test. And there is the hair test also. The urine test is the cheapest one. So, most of the employers are using this test. The result also comes fast. It will take only an hour. The urine test is not very reliable. It can sometimes give a false result. The hair test will betray you if you have ever used any drug while the tested hair was growing. As said earlier the weed will remain in your blood stream seven to approximately fifty days according to the frequency of smoking marijuana. The hair growing during that period will have the traces of the weed even after the expiry of the period. Only if the hair is cut off the traces will disappear. That is the reason why some addicts shave their head. But if you are taking the drug test to obtain a job please remember that any suspicious act by the applicant may cause his disqualification. Very recent use of the drug may not show in a hair test. Apart from that it is a very reliable test. Then there is the sweet test. This test is taken by sticking a sweet patch on the body. The sweet patch will be kept there for about a week and then it is removed and sent to the laboratory for testing. A long term user can be detected by this test. Since it is time consuming it is rarely used. Saliva test normally takes more than a week. Saliva has to be sent to the laboratory for the test. It is good to detect recent use of the drug. It is a very reliable test also. It is very convenient for the one who is tested. This marijuana does not do any good for your mind or body. It only harms the body and the mind. Marijuana ruins yours life. Instead of weeding out the deposits made by marijuana in your body is it not better not to use it at all? Excuses for the boys and girls using marijuana are not tenable. Some say that they use it because their seniors at home are using it. The excuse for others is that the seniors at school are using it. For some others it is for getting recognition from the friends and classmates. Lack of proper care and attention from parents is another reason for young people to fall into the practice of using the drugs. If the parents can monitor the activities of their children the parents can feel the changes in their offspring. The parents also can watch the friends the children have and enquire about their activities. The weed does not help in any way. It affects the memory. The use of marijuana hampers the motor coordination. If you use it for sometime you will get addicted to it. Then your relationship with others will get affected. If you use it longer you will have to use more and more to get a high. You will resort to criminal acts to obtain the necessary money. Only those who use the drug want to get the weed out of their system. The best way is to quit using the drug. Only time can properly cleanse your body of the weed. Some manufacturers are offering detoxification medicines for the purpose. These medicines are very expensive. Their effect is doubtful. Thanks for your support!

Hi everyone! I am just checking in to say thank you for your support, I made 60 days and it feels good. Yesterday I went to a type of bingo game, some people brought booze with them, I saw alot on the tables. It looked good and for a moment my mind wandered to thoughts of how much fun the game would be and how the booze would enhance the game play typical alcoholic thoughts. I went to the rest room and looked at my Hazelden book and went back out there and felt free. Free that I dont need that problem in my life anymore. This morning bright and early I went on a trip to a religious retreat that also deals in alcohol and drug addiction. I had the best talk with my friend on the way there and back. I am reading alot of the literature and really putting myself out there with sober friends. I had a wonderful day today. I am lucky I have this progam and God in my life. Tags:

WWE Smackdown vs RAW 2009 review
Saturday, November 22, 2008, 05:53 PM EST [General]
I had a whole review ready to put up but when i went to backspace someting I was clicked out of the writing section and it made me go 1 page back and I lost eveything. The worse part is I was right at the end. I'm just gonna shorten it up for ya.Road to Wrestlemania is fun and it is the mode that gives you cutscenes and an interesting storyline that branches off. Since you are only limited to certain superstars, THQ added Career Mode which does not help. There's no sotryline or cutscenes, you just go through the year winning belts. There are hidden challenges that not only give you nothing, you don't know exactly waht to do. A challenge would just say: Taunt your opponent ? times. You find out what it is after you complete it. Another bad part, its the only way to take your created superstar and raise their attributes. And on top of that, you raise stats by performing certain actions in the ring. It does suck cause you can't get your stats to where you exactly want them, and that's what destroys the whole create a superstar thing. Create an entrance and moveset are still there. PPV and Championship are taken out, with Finisher put in. Create a finisher is good for the most part, it could use a few more animations though. Also, to get abilities for your CAS, you have to unlock them in Career mode, and they don't tell you how to do that either.Roster Editor is good, I just wish you could change peoples stats and abilities. Highlight Reel is good and it makes the online experience better. Stables are changed up a bit, there are no more team attributes, but there are team finishers. Exhibition is still here with new matches like the inferno and gauntlet matches, and the hardcore match is now falls count anywhere. Tournament mode is still here and is the same as last year. The roster is good and will get better when the downloadable wrestlers come out. Now I just want to talk about the gameplay. First off, the stamina system is still here, yet when you start the game its off, the controls are the same, square is strike, right analog stick is grapple, triangle is finisher, same old, same old. A problem I have is when I go for springboard moves is that they always try to stop and it gets kind of annoying. The AI also reverses and tries to escape Ultimate control graples and the ground and pound feature. Another thing I don't like is the out of ring camera angle. Its hard to irish whip your opponent in the direction you want, especially when you want to get them on the table.Other than that you'll have to play a few matches to notice any differences. And I can't go through a review without mentioning the new tage team feature. When you're playing with your buddy in a tag match and he's the illegal partner, he won't get bored just watching you. He can pull down the rope, grab the ref, grab the opponent, and even tag himself in. And the illegal partner can build up a hot tag, which could mean the end of the match. This is a feature that is long awaited and finally has debuted. Expect this to stay around for a while.Closing CommentsAt the end of the day, Smackdown vs RAW 2009 is a fun and full game. You have plenty to do with all the different match types, and that's what makes WWE's games special. You can play a table, ladder, cage or falls count anywhere match and you could make it a tag team, triple threat, fatal 4 way, or just stick to the one on one choice. You have so many options and that's what sets apart WWE games from the rest for the past 9 years. And on the final decision on whether or not you should at least play the game, I say yes. Every wrestling fan should get this game, this is the ultimate wrestling experience for a video game. Either buy it or put it on your christmas list, this is definitely a game you should try.ScoresPresentation- The case is nice and the manual is better than last year. The menus are pretty cool and there's not much of a problem with anything. The presentation gets a 10.Graphics- Graphics have improved since last year, and the only bad thing would be the crowd. 9Sound- The song tracks are great, and the commentating is wonderful, I just don't like the announcing at people's entrances. It sounds like the announcer has something more to say when they're done. 9.5Gameplay- This is an overall good experience, there is similarity from last year, but its no big deal, but with career mode and having to build up created superstars, its not so good. 8.5Lasting Appeal- RTW should fill out some time, going for bonuses and all. Career mode isn't that good, but with downloadable content it should make you keep going back to the game.8.5Final rating(not an average)- 9. The main problem here is career mode and building up your superstar. But you should definitely buy it.Tags:
